Teaching Objectives
Course Description:
To cultivate students with the ability to investigate and explore related topics on design management and practice. Based on the students’ background and knowledge in the fields of design, management, design management, and design practice, the course begins with a basic introduction to design, management, and design management. Subsequently, according to his/her interest and ability in this field, each student will choose a special topic for further investigation and exploration. Each student will not only need to make presentations to the class to show his/her understanding of the topic, but will also have to keenly participate in discussions of topics presented by other fellow students.
Class Activities:
1) Reading of Textbook and journal papers: Information on selected topics will be collected mainly from the appointed textbook, electronic databases, as well as the Internet and studied thoroughly in advance.
2) Weekly Class Discussion and Hand-in: Discussions on the topics will be held among the students as well as between the instructor and the students. Class members will chair the discussion sessions in rotation, using mainly English in the presentation and discussion. Before the discussion, each student should hand in a written comment on the topic from his/her point of view.
3) Toward the end of the semester, each student will have to make a presentation of a special topic of his/her own choice. The report of this research shall be based on papers published in international journals, seminars, or conferences. A term report about this topic should also be submitted for final evaluation. It should be written in English (compulsory for all PhD program students) or Chinese, together with other useful materials studied and presented (eg, powerpoint files, videos, etc) for this course during the semester. Evaluation methods
Evaluation*:
40% Presentation and Discussion (incl. Technique, preparation, contribution, etc.)
40% Final Report & Presentation (depth of research, view point, supplementary information, etc.)
20% General Evaluation (incl. Class participation, learning attitude, etc.)
* All marks are made in relative points to be scaled to the proportion indicated above, and then adjusted accordingly to a range between around 60 and 90.
